ABOUT:

Blue-winged Teal (Anas discors)

Location: Found across North America in marshes, wetlands, ponds, and shallow lakes. Breeds in the northern U.S. and Canada, and winters in the southern U.S., Central America, and as far south as South America.

Diet: Feeds primarily on seeds and aquatic plants, but also consumes small invertebrates like insects, snails, and crustaceans, especially during breeding season.

Unique Facts:

Recognized by the distinctive blue-gray patch on its wings and, in males, a white crescent-shaped mark in front of the eyes.

One of the first duck species to migrate south in the fall and among the last to return in spring.

Known for its swift, low flights over water and agile movements when taking off.

Females are skilled at hiding nests, which are often concealed in dense vegetation near water.
