ABOUT:
Painted Bunting (Passerina ciris)
• Location: Breeds in the southeastern United States and parts of Texas, favoring dense brush, woodland edges, and scrub areas. Winters in Central America, the Caribbean, and southern Florida.
• Diet: Primarily consumes seeds, but during breeding season, it also eats insects, spiders, and other small invertebrates to provide extra protein.
• Unique Facts:
• Known for its vibrant plumage; males display bright blue heads, green backs, and red underparts, making them one of the most colorful songbirds in North America.
• Nicknamed the “nonpareil” (meaning “unrivaled”) due to its striking colors.
• Males take up to two years to reach full adult plumage, remaining green and camouflaged like females in their first year.
• Often shy and secretive, they are more frequently heard than seen, especially in dense vegetation.
